Color: black - very dark green
Glass Size: about 3 cm x 2 cm
Necklace Length : about 20 inches
Found: Exumas, Bahamas
To our surprise, we found a bunch of black sea glass in the Bahamas over the past 8 months! I did not know at the time we picked it up, but it turns out that this very dark green glass which appears black unless held directly up to a light source, is considered a very rare find indeed, perhaps even more uncommon to find than red glass. We were very fortunate to find several pieces and I saved them for something special. They are among some of the most smooth and well worn pieces we have found, probably because they are so very old. When we found them, they looked like rocks! Only after I picked them up and saw the sparkle did I even realize they were glass!
I dressed this one up especially for Fathers' Day, based upon the design my daughters gave to the very first piece we worked with, which they gave to their dad. It is a great design, so I went with it and made this one similar to theirs. THe black sea glass is wrapped in sterling silver.
The necklace is about 20 inches of faux leather. It is more durable and will not mold like leather can, so we tend to use it a lot on the boat. This one has a double cord and a silver plated lobster clasp.
No animals or habitats were harmed while collecting these items or creating this jewelry. We take the utmost precaution to preserve the areas we visit and leave nothing but footprints. We visit remote areas, typically uninhabited by humans, and gently gather found materials to make our jewelry materials.
Our sailing family has found these items and created this original piece of jewelry while on our travels aboard our 42 foot ketch sailboat. For more about our journey, please visit our web site at sailingserenity.com .
